My friends are leaving the country. Friend A, a print journalist, was recently hired by a media company in Singapore. Friend B, a broadcast journalist, is leaving for Holland to study under a government grant (she admits she has plans of working in Europe). Friend C, a doctor, just got her immigrant visa in Canada. Friend D, a physical therapist, is processing her papers applying for work also in Canada. Friend E, a businesswoman, will be joining her husband in the U.S.
In five months time, five of my friends will be working abroad. The country will be losing another five hardworking, intelligent individuals. They will be among the multitude of Filipinos who have left the country in search of a greener pasture.
The promise of a better life abroad beckons. Each day, I continue to look for reasons why I shouldn’t be lured.
