Yesterday was National Children's Book Day in the Philippines. The National Children's Book Day is celebrated every third Tuesday of July. This is to commemorate the day of the publication of Jose Rizal's children's book, The Monkey and the Turtle, in London in 1889 (Rizal is the country's national hero). Yesterday's celebration was held at the National Library. This year's theme is "May Tinig ang Libro: Magbasa, Makinig."

The book launching went well. I am proud of the batch of books we have launched because they were written by veteran children's book writers: Eugene (an eight-time Palanca awardee), Genaro and Dr. Lina (also Palanca awardees) and Dina, a U.P. professor.
The books were illustrated by multi-awarded children's book illustrators: Mark, Jomike, Ferdie, Ibarra and Leo. They are humble, talented and harworking individuals who are dedicated to their craft. I always enjoy working with them.

I am happy that many locally published children's books are now available in bookstores. The market used to be dominated by imported children's books. I have nothing against imported books. In fact, I have bought some good ones and I am scouting for more. However, I believe that our children should be introduced first and foremost to stories with local color. This way the children will know more about their roots, understand their culture and appreciate it better.
