I took this picture from Manila Bulletin's Sept. 13 issue. The caption says "Some 250 detainees in the Cotabato City jail voluntarily had their heads shaved so they can donate their hair for the cleanup of the oil spill in Guimaras sea in the Visayas. Inspector Panga Arab, jailwarden, said the unity displayed by the detainees, be they Muslims or Christians, indicates the real spirit of the Filipinos in time of crisis."
Much has been said about the Filipino spirit of unity in time of crisis. While I am proud of it, hindi ko pa rin magawang maging masaya para dito. Minsan kasi iniisip ko rin kung bakit sa tuwing may krisis lang nabibigyang-diin ang "unity" na iyan. Kung bakit sa tuwing may krisis lang tayo magaling magpakita ng pakikiisa. Kung walang krisis, nagkakanya-kanya. Mas gusto ba natin na may krisis muna bago magkaisang kumilos? Siguro nga.
Kaya siguro madalas dumarating ang sunud-sunod na krisis sa atin: nagmamarakulyo ang Mayon Volcano, madalas bumabaha sa mga lugar na pinakukunan ng kabuhayan katulad ng sa Central Luzon na rice granary ng bansa, binibisita tayo madalas ng bagyo, nagkakaroon ng landslide. Para madalas tayong magkaisa. Hindi maganda.
