The Sickening Tale of an Able-Bodied Man

September 22, 2006

Yesterday, I had to go up a footbridge so I could cross a major thoroughfare and enter a department store. On the footbridge, I saw a blind man strumming a guitar and happily singing. Infront of him was a small wooden box where passersby could drop money. I pitied the blind man when I saw him. It looked like it was about to rain and I was wondering how he could get cover in time before the downpour comes.

When it started to trickle, I noticed that a "sighted" man with a bulky built gave the blind man an umbrella. I remembered seeing the "sighted" man before I went up the footbridge. He was sitting on one of the steps, smoking, and seemed to be just trying to while away time.

The sighted man said something to the blind man, got the wooden box and opened it. He seemed contented with what he saw in the wooden box.

I did not see what happened next. I need not see it or rather I did not want to see it.

I was struck by the irony of the situation: a blind man was trying to earn money by singing while an able-bodied man was just trying to while away time, waiting to get some money from the blind man's wooden box.

Using other people that way to get money sickens me and the fact that certain able-bodied people take advantage of the effort of some physically-challenged people sickens me even more. Dear God, bakit po may mga ganung tao sa mundo?
