Last month, the US Food and Drug Administration has lifted the 14-year ban on silicone-gel implants. I'm sure that people in the cosmetic and reconstructive surgery industry like the Albany plastic surgeons are happy about this news. So what's my take on silicone-gel implants? I'd say I'm pro if they will be used for reconstruction in women who needed them after surgery, especially after breast cancer.
I know of a breast cancer survivor who is now contemplating on having a breast reconstruction. She told me she wants it because it is something that she thinks would bring back her lost self-confidence. She said she is so much blessed, having survived the killer disease. But the reality that she lost her breasts to mastectomy still pains her. I hope breast reconstruction would indeed bring back her self-confidence. And I'm praying that it's really, really safe.
