Look at those people! Nakikita ba ninyo ako sa pila? hehehehe. Nope, we didn't line up to catch a glimpse of a local or foreign superstar nor were we going to attend a big prayer rally. Last Sunday, my kid friends and I joined thousands of other people who patiently waited in line for many hours for our turn to come on board this ship.
The M/V Doulos is the World's Largest Floating Book Shop according to the Guiness Book of World Records. Carrying over half a million books, the ship visits many countries all over the world to sell books at affordable prices.
Built in 1914, two years younger than the ship Titanic, it is also called the Grand Old Lady of the Sea because it is the oldest ocean-going passenger ship. It was named "Doulos," a Greek word meaning "servant."
Interestingly, the crew of Doulos is composed of 320 people who come from all over the world. And they are all volunteers. They do not receive any salary for their sevices in the ship. Many of them are talented young people who entertained us with songs and dances so we won't get bored in the loooooong queue.
Before we left the ship, my friend who's a rookie photographer managed to take this beautiful shot of the ship.
It was getting late but hundreds of people were still willing to wait to get on board. If the number of people who visited Doulos was an indication of the number of Filipinos who love books, then it's a good sign.
while i was there, i was thinking “talaga bang readers lahat ang mga nandito or they are just curious to see the ship?” sobra kasi talaga ang dami ng tao, from the gate of the pier to the docking station ang pila. i guess the media played a big part in attracting those people. unlike its previous visits, medyo hyped sa ngayon because it was featured in the daily papers pati sa mga sikat na tv magazine shows.
yep, the ship was in Pier 13, in Manila, sa likod po ng Manila Hotel. could it be that the floating bookstore you’re referring to which docked in cavite or batangas was also doulos? kasi itong doulos, pumunta rin ng batangas, pati bacolod.
hehehe i guess hindi naman sa kuripot ang mga publishers. poor sila hehehe. hindi kaya ng bulsa nilang mag-invest nang ganun-ganun na lang sa mga printing machines. as regards paper stock, may mga nakikita na rin akong books dito sa atin na hindi na newsprint, matte paper. yung glossy, hindi masyado patok kasi glaring sa mata. i’ve also seen textbooks na naka-full color na, lalo na sa science and it’s locally published. most of the publishers here do not have machines na magha-hardbound. i guess they can’t afford to have one. karaniwan, the publishers source out. sa iba nagpapa-hardboud, pero mahal din ang bayad.
Posted by bea at January 24, 2007, 8:24 amako… maraming reasons kung bakit nandun…

Bey, i didn’t know you already have kids. =) yeah, been there before w/ carey and there wasn’t much inside. their kid’s books were great and cheap though, i think we bought some for our pamangkins.
CAREY, puro kid’s books lang ang loot namin hehehe. thanks for tagging me. i’ll post mine later.
LHADYMITCH, yeah, sooobrang dami ng tao talaga. it took us two hours to get on board. sorry about the first two pictures. i was puzzled why they’re not as clear as the third one. baka may problem sa html code nila. i’ll try to fix them later.
Posted by bea at January 26, 2007, 8:27 amWow - Ate Bea - NAKS!
I saw this advertised on TFC and I was excited but I didn’t know that its popularity will get this much attention!
Good for you fellow pinoys!!
Naalala ko nung elementary ako, the St. Paul Sisters would come by our school with a Ford Fiera full of religious books. Nandiyan na yung life story ni Pope John Paul in komiks version, Lives of Saints, and other little inspirational things. I used to always get excited about that. I can just imagine the excitement of the people getting on this historical ship, not only to say ‘I was in it!’ but purchase books at reasonable prices as well.
Hmn, I’ve read that book, yung Lives of Saints. Kung tutuusin kasi, last day na yata yun nung nakapunta kami dun.
Posted by bea at January 29, 2007, 8:26 amDi ko lang naabutan ang Doulos sometime a decade ago…nasa Subic naka-dock, napuntahan ng parents at siblings ko while ako yata nasa bowling house? I could have went there kasi I like books…a way to learn fast…kung andun ako baka ang dami kong nabiling puzzles and self-help books…
Posted by c5 at January 29, 2007, 10:23 pmmahilig ka pala sa self-help books, c5. ako rin mahilig sa books kahit nung bata pa ako, kahit walang mabiling books sa town namin. i would frequent the house of my teachers in elementary so i could read their books =).

Two reasons: either this people really love books or they just wanted to get a hold of something that they can resell at a much higher price later, hehehehe… This looks like the pier in manila, am I right?
I remember there was another “floating” bookstore back in the days pero either sa cavite or batangas area palagi ang dock nya so we had to commute all the way to that area to buy books… pila pila rin, nagmumuring kasi ang mga hardbound na textbooks, ganda pa ng bookpaper na ginammit, glossy na, colored pa pagka illustrate!
